Every bar of soap we make at SOAPHERA leaves our home studio wrapped without a single piece of plastic. No shrink wrap, no plastic sleeves, no unnecessary packaging of any kind. It is a decision we made before we sold our very first bar, and it is one we have never questioned since.
But why does packaging matter so much for a small handmade soap brand? And what difference does it actually make? In this post we want to be honest with you about why we made this choice, what it means for our products, and why we think it is one of the most important decisions any beauty brand can make right now.
The Problem With Plastic in the Beauty Industry
The beauty and personal care industry produces over 120 billion units of packaging every year globally. The vast majority of that is plastic. Shampoo bottles, body wash containers, pump dispensers, plastic wrapping, plastic lids — it adds up to an enormous amount of waste, much of which ends up in landfill or, worse, in our oceans and waterways.
In the UK alone, we throw away an estimated 1.8 billion plastic bottles from the bathroom every year. Most bathroom plastics are not recycled because they are contaminated with product residue and many councils do not accept them in kerbside collections. Even when people try to do the right thing, the system often fails them.
We found this deeply uncomfortable. If we were going to make natural soap that was genuinely good for people and the planet, it made no sense to wrap it in something that would take 400 years to break down.
What Plastic-Free Actually Means For Us
When we say plastic-free, we mean it completely. Every SOAPHERA bar is either unwrapped or wrapped in recycled paper, kraft paper, or compostable materials. There is no hidden plastic liner, no plastic sticker, no plastic seal.
This was not the easiest or cheapest option when we were starting out. Plastic packaging is cheap, easy to source, and gives products a certain polished look that customers recognise. Paper and compostable packaging requires more thought, more care, and often more cost.
But we decided early on that we were not willing to compromise on this. If the whole point of SOAPHERA is to make products that are honest, natural, and genuinely good for you and the world around you, then the packaging has to reflect those same values. You cannot make a natural handmade soap bar and then wrap it in plastic. It contradicts everything the product stands for.
Why Soap Bars Are the Most Sustainable Swap You Can Make
One of the reasons we focus on soap bars rather than liquid soaps is precisely because of packaging. A single plastic bottle of liquid body wash or shampoo is used once and then discarded. Our soap bars replace that entirely.
A well-made, well-kept soap bar lasts between three and five weeks with daily use. Over the course of a year, one person switching from liquid body wash to a soap bar eliminates around ten to twelve plastic bottles from their bathroom. Multiply that across a household and the impact is significant.
Our shampoo bars go even further. A single shampoo bar replaces two to three plastic shampoo bottles. Our Hair Care collection is coming soon with plastic-free shampoo bars that work for both hair and body, meaning one bar replaces even more plastic than a standard shampoo bar.
What Happens to Our Packaging
The paper and kraft wrapping we use can be composted at home or recycled in your standard paper recycling bin. There is nothing to separate, nothing to rinse, and nothing that needs special disposal. You simply unwrap your bar and recycle or compost the wrapping. That is it.
We think the simplest solutions are often the best ones. Soap does not need a complex container. It does not need a pump, a lid, or a plastic sleeve. A beautiful bar of handmade soap wrapped in paper does everything a plastic bottle of liquid soap does, and it does it better.
The Skin Benefits of Choosing Bar Soap
Here is something that often surprises people. Choosing plastic-free soap is not just better for the environment. In many cases, it is better for your skin too.
Most liquid soaps and body washes contain synthetic preservatives, stabilisers, and thickeners that are needed to keep a liquid product shelf-stable inside a plastic bottle. Many of these ingredients, including certain parabens and sulphates, can be irritating to sensitive skin or disruptive to the skin's natural moisture barrier.
Our cold process soap bars contain none of these additives. They are preserved naturally by the soap-making process itself, which creates a stable, long-lasting bar without the need for synthetic preservatives. The result is a product that is not only gentler on the planet but genuinely gentler on your skin.
If you have been struggling with dry, sensitive, or reactive skin, switching to a natural handmade bar soap is one of the simplest changes you can make. Take a look at our Blue Solace Clay Soap Bar, formulated with rare Serbian blue clay to calm inflammation and soothe sensitive, oily, and combination skin types.
Small Brands, Big Impact
We know that SOAPHERA is a small business. We make our soap bars by hand in small batches from our home studio in the UK. We are not a multinational beauty corporation with the power to change industry-wide practices overnight.
But we do not think that means small brands are off the hook when it comes to sustainability. If anything, we think small independent brands have a responsibility to lead by example. We have the freedom to make decisions that larger companies cannot make quickly because of shareholder pressure, supply chain complexity, or cost concerns.
Every time you choose a plastic-free product from a small independent brand, you are voting with your wallet for a different kind of beauty industry. One that is more honest, more sustainable, and more accountable.
What You Can Do at Home
Making your bathroom more sustainable does not have to happen all at once. Here are some simple swaps you can make gradually:
Start with your body wash. Replace your next empty plastic body wash bottle with a natural soap bar. Our Berry Muffin Soap Bar or Strawberry Soap Bar are popular choices for anyone who loves a fruity, uplifting wash.
Move on to shampoo when you are ready. Shampoo bars take a short adjustment period as your scalp adapts, but most people find they prefer them within two to three weeks. Our plastic-free shampoo bars are coming soon to the Hair Care collection.
Try an exfoliating body treat. Our Coffee & Turmeric Body Scrub Bar is a brilliant plastic-free alternative to liquid scrubs, packed with ground coffee and turmeric for a genuine glow-boosting shower experience.
Consider your face care routine. Many face washes come in plastic tubes or bottles. Switching to a natural face bar like our Blue Solace Clay Soap Bar simplifies your routine and eliminates another piece of plastic from your bathroom.
None of these swaps require a dramatic overnight overhaul of your routine. Just replace things with a plastic-free alternative when they run out. Over a year, those small changes add up to dozens of plastic bottles that never need to exist.
Our Promise to You
Plastic-free packaging is not a marketing gimmick for us. It is not a trend we have jumped on or a badge we display for good PR. It is a genuine commitment that runs through every decision we make at SOAPHERA, from the ingredients we choose to the way we wrap and ship our products.
We are a small independent brand made by real people who care about what we put into the world. Every bar we make is an opportunity to do things a little better, a little more honestly, and a little more kindly towards the planet we all share.
If you have any questions about our packaging, our ingredients, or how we make our products, we would love to hear from you. You can get in touch through our Contact page and we will always reply personally.
Thank you for choosing SOAPHERA. Every bar makes a difference.
